Class Activities/Projects
Homework: Students will have various worksheets, study guides, and writing assignments to complete for homework throughout the school year. Most of the student’s reading work will be completed during class, however there may be days he/she will have homework. Completed homework will be given points. Late homework will automatically receive a 50% grade and will be accepted until the end of the novel/topic that the homework was assigned.
Random Sampling Assignments: Some in class assignments and some homework assignments may have a random sample grading system in which only certain rows of students’ work will be collected and graded. Rows of students will be chosen by a flip of a coin or a rolling of dice. These assignments will be graded with either a check (100%) or a minus (0%). If the student follows the three F.C.A.s (focus correction area) listed and explained in class, he or she will receive a check, if he or she does not follow the instructions, he/she will receive a minus.
Vocabulary: For each novel or short story the student works on during class, there will be a list of vocabulary to learn. They are expected to know this vocabulary for short quizzes at the end of each section or story. Students will have plenty of notice before their vocabulary quizzes. They will have practice using the words during class time as well.
Projects: Throughout the school year, the students will be completing several different projects, some are listed below, and others will be given to the students in class. The students will be given at least two weeks notice before the due date. For every day a project is late, 10% will be taken off of the grade.
A to Z Novel Writing: Each student is required to read novels outside of the classroom in addition to the novels read in class. The students will complete the A to Z Novel Writing activities throughout the school year. Additional information about the project can be found on the class period tab.
Journal Entries: Each nine weeks I will post journal entry questions on the classroom website. At least four (4) questions must be answered per nine weeks. The students are able to choose what questions each wants to answer. To answer the questions, use at least five (5) sentences with correct grammar and punctuation. The journal entries must be typed. The journals can be emailed to me, or placed in the tray. I will give one (1) bonus point for each question answered after the assigned questions. No more than five (5) bonus points will be given per nine weeks.
Assessment: There will be several ways the students will be assessed for reading class during the year. Classwork, quizzes, tests, projects, homework, participation, and others will be part of the grade.
